Finding the right training approach for Law Enforcement can be a challenge. The reality is that the job is not just physically demanding; it is mentally taxing as well. Shift work, long shifts, and the strains of the job are exhausting. But the reality is, that isn’t an excuse.
One day you are going to be tested. Are you ready for it? Because if you aren’t, you are going to get checked. In law enforcement, a lack of physical preparedness can change your life in an instant.
Let’s set the record straight: You don’t have to be in peak physical condition to be in law enforcement. You need to be in good enough shape to pass a basic fitness test. From that point on your fitness is in your hands. Some officers recognize the critical importance of being physically capable, while others dismiss it. If you belong to the latter group, this program isn’t for you.
This program is crafted for individuals who recognize that at any point in time they could be tested. And if they fall short, they may be hurt or jeopardize the safety of those they protect or care about.
This is for the individuals willing to do the work to make sure that doesn’t happen.
This program is not just for current officers; it’s also for aspiring LEO personnel and anyone else who wants to enhance their physical capability.
Now, let’s be clear: this program is not designed to help you scrape by a LEO fitness test. I don’t think any fitness test standards for law enforcement are acceptable. This program is designed to make sure you don’t ever have to worry about passing a LEO test. You will demolish the standards.
So, what does being prepared look like?
Let’s break it down:
Strength Training: Establishing a solid foundation of strength to be effective in any environment or situation.
Power Production: Power is defined as moving with speed and force. Speed Kills. Let’s develop that Power.
Muscular Endurance & Anaerobic Conditioning: “Fatigue Makes Cowards of us all.” There is nothing scarier than being tired in a fight. In order to prepare effectively, we have to prepare intelligently.
Mobility Training: Mobility is about moving dynamically. Being in control of your body movement in space is the key to being a better athlete.
I’m going to potentially hurt feelings here: Aerobic Conditioning such as running long distances is overrated. It is especially overrated for a LEO. If you enjoy jogging, swimming, biking... go for it. But don’t expect it to be a focus within this program. You are not going to find yourself in a long, drawn out fight at a slightly elevated heart rate; you’ll be fighting at maximum effort for under 2 min. And if you are chasing someone for over 400 meters.. jump in a damn car.
While combat sport specific training is undoubtedly beneficial, and I highly recommend it, this program is focused on enhancing your strength and conditioning specifically.
With this in mind I have developed a 5-week Strength and conditioning program aimed at improving your strength, Power, Anaerobic capacity and Mobility. It’s designed to help you feel capable, look capable, and most importantly, be capable.
